8 Hindi Films on LGBT You Must Watch Helping In Their Acceptability

Love is in the air, as the month of February also known as the month of love is here.
For decades 14th February has been celebrated as Valentine’s day. Couples express their love for
each other on the day of Valentine by gifting a present to their partner, or by making their wishes
come true. From forever the word “couple” insinuates- a girl and a boy, but never a girl with a girl
or a boy with a boy. The Indian society has always looked down on LGBT or homosexuality as a disease.
“Media and Movies”- they say, is a reflection of the society. Movies show what audience can relate to.

1. Aligarh

Earlier LGBT community was frowned up, the queers were nor welcome neither accepted by the
people. But as we know “Love is Universal”, the essence of love stays, no matter the hardships.
Movies like – “Aligarh”, they taught us that no matter what the differences are “love in itself is a
beautiful word” and that one should be true to themselves by coming out of the closet, by loving
whoever they feel for, by accepting themselves and by loving themselves. It tells us that ‘tags’ are
not important and neither is society.

2. Dear Dad

Coming out or even accepting yourself as the person you are, it is not always easy. There are some

in the later stages of life, such is the story of the movie – “Dear Dad”. The story shares a beautiful
message about how a father of two realizes much later in his life that he is a gay. It shows how he
still has a beautiful bond with his children, parents and his wife. The movie ends on a happy note.

There are times when situations show us our true self. An example that justifies the statement is the

movie – “Fire” a movie made in the year 1996, says about how love can happen in the most weird and
suffocating scenarios. It focuses on two women- Sita and Radha, left alone by their husbands for either
a mistress or celibacy, who fall in love with each other. The story motivates people that if your love is
true, the boundations, the society and the circumstances do not matter. Love can find its way in the
darkest of situations.

Made In Heaven

There are many people who never #come out because of the pressure of peers or society or family.
Loving someone on the basis of their gender, age or colour is wrong. Love knows no boundaries; it is
the purest emotion one can feel. “Made in Heaven” is a series that talks about the struggle of couples.
It shows that everyone has a somewhat twisted thought process. It portrays today’s India as a potent
blend of old and new where tradition jostles with modern aspirations against the backdrop of Big Fat
Indian Weddings juxtaposed against the story of the two protagonists. It is a story about human
nature and greater social dynamics. It speaks about a lot of social taboos related to couples.
